Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, recently visited Chelmsford Prison with Vicky Ford, MP for Chelmsford.
Over the last few years, prison security has improved at Chelmsford Prison thanks to new body scanners and measures to prevent drugs being thrown over the prison wall. This has helped to keep inmates safe and keep neighbours, including a nearby school, safe.
On a visit to the site last week, Stephen Metcalfe talked to prison guards about safety and morale. Overall, the feedback was positive and the guards felt it was a good place to work.
The numbers in Chelmsford Prison are high but this is partly due to recent successes by Essex Police in catching criminals. HMP Chelmsford serves the whole of Essex.
Stephen Metcalfe said: “Prison has three purposes – punishment, deterrent and rehabilitation. On my visit to Chelmsford Prison, I met with the Governor Garry Newnes who is ensuring that the environment is safe and secure and that these three aims are being achieved.”
Stephen added: “I also tried some prison food which I have to say was very tasty!”
