Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock and chairman of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, celebrates another successful STEM for BRITAIN competition in Parliament.
STEM for BRITAIN returned to Parliament this March with early-career scientists from universities across the country who presented their research, via a poster, to Members of Parliament and a panel of expert judges. There were 120 finalists in this year’s competition which covers 5 separate fields – biological and biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematical sciences, and physics.
The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, of which Stephen is chairman, led the event and presented winners with their medals and certificates. A special mention goes out to Kyle Greenland, Maciej Walerowski, Anna Weatherburn, Daniel Gardham, and Cristina Ruiz Villena who won Gold in their respective categories, as well as Sawsan El Zahr who achieved 1st place in the Dyson Sustainability Award.

Stephen Metcalfe said: “This annual competition is an important date in the parliamentary calendar because it gives MPs an opportunity to speak to a wide range of the country’s best young researchers. These early career engineers, mathematicians, and scientists are the architects of our future and STEM for BRITAIN is politicians’ best opportunity to meet them and understand their work.
A huge congratulations to the 2024 winners. It really is a remarkable achievement which I hope will boost them and their careers. There was some fascinating research from all the 2024 finalists and it makes me very optimistic about the future of UK science.”
