Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, helped launch the Fair Charge policy paper ‘Driving away from fossil fuels: consumer attitudes to electric vehicles’.
The Government’s commitment to being carbon neutral by 2050 will only be viable through major technological change and electric vehicles are an integral part of this.
This study outlines that consumer preference is to buy a new car which is either a plug-in hybrid or battery electric vehicle. It also shows that there is a growing demand for battery electric vehicles over that of hybrids.
Stephen Metcalfe said: “The electrification of road transport is truly an exciting opportunity for the UK to turn its back on polluting petrol and diesel and meet the all-important target of Net Zero by 2050.
It’s brilliant to see that UK consumers are already showing preferences for electric vehicles – in fact, this remarkable change is an encouraging indication of future demand in the run up to 2030, with the ban of new petrol and diesel car sales”.
