Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, has chaired a panel on Transparency and Accountability in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at this year’s UK Internet Governance Forum (IGF) on 1 November with researchers and practitioners from the field.
AI has the potential to transform the world, simplifying tasks, helping businesses, and even improving surgical outcomes. Yet many people fear the effects that AI will have on our economy and health of our society.
Stephen is a huge champion of science and technology in Parliament, acting as co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI. He chaired this IGF panel on AI to explore how transparency in AI and its algorithms could help demystify the technology.
The panel discussed how to ensure that AI and Machine Learning used by governments, advertisers and businesses are transparent to the users whose data has been collected. This is important because old, inaccurate, and sensitive data can both be mis-used and lead to biased decision making causing sub-optimal outcomes for all parties and an erosion of trust in online transactions.
The panellists, Dr Rumman Chowdhury (Director of Machine Learning, Ethics, Transparency and Accountability at Twitter), Dr Evert Haasdijk (Artificial Intelligence Expert & Senior Forensic Manager at Deloitte) and Bridget Boakye (AI lead Tony Blair Institute) provided illuminating insights into AI’s future and how we can ensure that AI is used responsibly and with due diligence.
Stephen Metcalfe said: “A huge thank you to UK IGF for inviting me to chair this discussion on transparency in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. We have to talk about AI, we cannot neglect it. We have to take control of it so that we can ensure transparency and accountability in its deployment”.
